Bennett Racings 4yo Captain Redbeard looked like a horse with a good future ahead of him when winning his maiden easily at Warnambool on Thursday. The son of Per Incanto jumped as fav and Declan Bates stuck with the gelding after his very good run 1st up when 3rd at Seymour.
Captain Redbeard jumped well but on the Heavy 8 surface he took a while to get into stride which allowed two runners to charge off in front and build up quite a big lead. Even coming to the turn Captain Redbeard, although 4th in the run, had commenced his run albeit a long way off them. As Declan gave the boy full bore he seemed to struggle in the straight, even changing strides, but Delan picked him up and his class shone as he gathered them in to win running away.
A terrific effort by Captain Redbeard who had always shown good ability from a youngster but injury forced his delay to the races. Another great training effort by Ciaron Maher and his Team who identified the race as a perfect 2nd up run although the heavy track did raise some concerns.
Captain Redbeard is a nice horse in the making and if he follows the same path as many of his Champion sires stock he will only get better with age and out in distance.
The win at only his 3rd start took Captain Redbeards overall record to 3 starts, 1 – 0 – 1 $28,250.
Captain Redbeard was a 200k purchase from 2024 Magic Millions Sale from top New Zealand Farm Little Avondale. He is a son of Champion New Zealand Sire Per Incanto out of the Redoutes Choice mare Fortunes Choice. Captain Redbeard is a full brother to Gr1 winner Bonham WRC Levin Classic and comes from a very good family littered with some very familiar names most of which were trained by the late Champion trainer Bart Cummings. Captain Redbeards 2nd dam is the very smart racemare Banc de Fortune winner of the Listed AJC Aspiration H., 2nd in the STC Arrowfield Stud S., Gr.1 and dam of the Listed SAJC Oaklands Plate winner Eagle Island. She was a ½ sister to stakeswinner Zingam and also to Zona dam of Bart Cummings great mare multiple Gr1 winner Faint Perfume winner of the VRC Oaks, Gr.1, STC Vinery Stud S., Gr.1etc and dam of Good Idea winner of the SAJC Adelaide Cup, Gr.2, 2d SAJC Adelaide Cup, Gr.2 etc and Chains Of Honour winner of the BRC Grand Prix S., Gr.3.. Captain Redbeards 3rd dam was another great racemare for Bart Cummings in the Champion 3yo filly Danendri winner of AJC Australian Oaks, Gr.1, STC Ansett Australia S., Gr.1, VRC Wakeful S., Gr.2. Danendri was a sister to stakeswinners Danestorm and Chickens dam of stakeswinner Do You Think.
