THE LEGACY OF SNITZEL
In so many ways, 2025 has been the year of Snitzel. Arrowfield will always remember it as the year of his death at the age of 22, leaving breeders with a precious final two crops to see through the sale-rings of 2026 & 2027 and (we can say this with confidence) then cheer to notable success during the rest of this decade.
But the statistical record will also show the last 12 months as a year of remarkable achievement by the four-time Champion Sire, who capped it last Saturday with his 16th individual stakeswinner of 2025, and No 164 of his stupendous career.
That’s 3YO gelding Matias, the convincing and stylish winner of $300,000 BRC Grand Prix S. 1800m G3, with another Snitzel gelding, Agent Zero completing the quinella, and Tambeloa third.
As it happens, Matias is also the 16th individual Snitzel stakeswinner for 2025 !

THE LEGACY OF EIGHT CARAT
In the world of horse breeding there are an elite group of broodmares who create a true international dynasty. One such mare is Eight Carat who became the most influential broodmare in Australasia during the second half of the 20th century. She became the prized jewel of the Cambridge Stud broodmare band.
Eight Carat (1975–2000) was one of the most influential Thoroughbred broodmares in history, particularly within Australasia.
Eight Carat was a half sister to the champion English racemare HABIBTI (1980 – sired by Habitat) who won the Gr1 Lowther Stakes, Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, Gr1 July Cup, Gr1 Sprint Championship, Gr1 Prix de l’Abbaye and the Gr1 Kings Stand Stakes (British Horse of the Year in 1983, Timeform rating 136).
Eight Carat was un-raced, but while her illustrious half sister Habibti was so brilliant on track she was disappointing at stud. Meanwhile Eight Carat was imported to New Zealand and began to forge an enduring legacy here in the Southern Hemisphere. She is responsible for 5 individual stakes winning sons and daughters, who between them won 28 stakes races, and it has been an incredibly prolific family. Without question the deeds of Eight Carat have been phenomenal. She was New Zealand Broodmare Of The Year in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
Eight Carat has left her own dynasty through her sons and daughters which will ensure her name is to the forefront of the breeding and racing industry for many years to come.
She is one of only two mares to produce five individual Group One winners:
During her career as a broodmare, Eight Carat produced five Group One winners:
Diamond Lover – Gr1 Railway Stakes
Kaapstad – Gr1 VRC Sires Produce Stakes
Marquise – Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes
Octagonal – won ten Gr1’s incl Gr1 Cox Plate
Mouawad – Gr1 George Ryder Stakes, Gr1 Futurity Stakes, Gr1 Australian Guineas
