Bennett Racing 3yo Purple Streak made a mess of his rivals when making a highly impressive debut at Werribee on Tuesday. With Ben Allen in the saddle the 3yo jumped well, sat behind the leader, then kicked up and simply ran away on straightening to win by a widening 5.25Len. He certainly was explosive with his turn of foot with the time a blistering 64.56s – some 4.62 lens faster than standard time. Interestingly the only other 1100m race on the card, Race 5 a BM56 was run in 65.87s – some 1.31s slower which is about 8 lens. Whatever way you look at it – this was a very impressive performance – visually and on the clock.
As a colt Purple Streak was a difficult young boy, very similar to how his ¾ brother in blood The Astrologist was as a youngster. Both were gelded in their 2yo year and in Purple Streaks case he was re-educated by CRC Equine after being difficult. Looking back at his early trainer video updates, the common thought was always “he needs to grow and strengthen” but for anyone who remembers that multiple Gr1 winning sprinter Brawny Spirit, size doesn’t always matter ! A homebred for Shadwell Farm ( Phil, Sue & Ric Wells) and Nathan Bennett and he was purchased as a Weanling for $80K at the Great Southern Sale by Bennett Racing.
He was always an outstanding foal and later as a weanling he stood out when at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. Purple Streak is a lovely type of gelding, well made, strong and a terrific mover.
Purposely bred as his 2yo metropolitan winning dam is a ¾ sister to Aquada The Astrologists dam. A son of the good siring son of Zoustar in Zousain, Purple Streak is in fact a ¾ brother in blood to The Astrologist ( by Zoustar). Although Purple Steak may not have The Astrologist’s big frame or physique he certainly has inherited some of the big boy’s ability. He has been given time and here he is on debut absolutely demolishing this field for his delighted owners. He is the 2nd Homebred purchased by Bennett Racing as a Weanling to bolt in on debut. The other one, Kalkarni Royale would go on to win 5 races of which 2 were in Melbourne and over $320K in prize money.
Congratulations to all owners and thankyou to Malua Racing.
