Smart Bennett Racing 3yo Nicconi filly Colorado Cruz stamped herself as
a filly to follow with a terrific run for 3rd at Sandown 11/1. The filly
was 2nd up after her brilliant win 1st up at Colac on the 17/12.
Unfortunately, Liam Riordan was suspended so Danial Moor to the reins on
the Danny O’Brien filly. Starting as 2nd fav Colorado Cruz jumped well
and Daniel Moor elected to push forward wide. After 400m the filly was
severely hampered by the eventual winner and was stopped in her tracks.
Moor got the filly back underneath him and settled outside the leader to
the turn. Unfortunately Moor missed the boat and allowed a runner to
cross him into the straight and the filly lost momentum, but she again
rallied and fought strong to the line to be beaten 0.2L. It should be
noted that she gave the winner 2.5kg which made her effort even more
terrific. She had the best sectionals of the race and there may have
been grounds to protest as mentioned earlier the winner took her running
early in the race.
Testament to Danny O’Brien and his Barwon Heads team Colorado Cruz is
low flying, loving the beach life and has given every indication that
she may have so much more to offer this prep.
An 80k Adelaide Magic Millions purchase, Colorado Cruz is a 1/2 sister
to Bennett Racing’s 2-time metro winner Defiant Diva.
The filly has now had 5 starts for a win a 2nd and 2 x 3rds with
earnings of $43210.
