That’s the way to win on debut!

Bennett Racing well-bred 3yo colt Southport Tycoon gave promise of better things to come with an easy 1.3L win at Geelong on Friday. In a race that had several highly touted runners, Southport Tycoon drifted in the betting to 10s through weight of money for the favourite.

The son of Written Tycoon has been taken along quietly by the Maher / Eustace Team and after his nice trial win at Bendigo last week, they decided the colt was ready for Geelong.

With Harry Coffey up, who had ridden him in his last trial, Southport Tycoon jumped well and Harry manoeuvred him over to the one out three back position and allowed the tall colt to get into stride. When Damian Oliver whipped around the field on the favourite, Harry let the colt slide up a little closer to keep him within striking distance. On straightening Harry had the colt challenging four wide and soon after he hit the lead. Southport Tycoon raced away in the straight and although he star gazed a bit over the last 200m he always had the race in his keeping.

A terrific performance on debut by a big striding colt with plenty of improvement to come for sure. The win certainly was no surprise for the stable as they have long held the colt in very high regard. With spring just around the corner who knows how far Southport Tycoon could go this prep.

Southport Tycoon was a 300k purchase from the Daandine Stud draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and owns an American pedigree on his dam’s side. His imported dam is the placed More Than Ready mare Ready To Rule. The daughter of Champion sire and long-time shuttle sire More Than Ready is a full sister to the Listed winning & Gr1 placed mare Grace And Power. Also imported into Australia, Grace And Power is the dam of Gr1 Darley Classic winner Delectation and the unraced Gracie’s Lass. Gracie’s Lass of course is the dam of 2 time Gr1 winner Artorious who also placed at Gr1 level overseas in his two international campaigns.  The Written Tycoon / More Than Ready cross is more recently responsible for producing the 2 time Gr1 winning sprinter Coolangatta.

Congatulations to all owners and thankyou to the Team at Maher Racing for having the colt ready to roll on debut.
