Tough genuine and a terrific trier is the best way to describe Bennett Racing 4yo Magnaspin.
Travelling up to Sydney for the first time to contest the 500k The Hunter, the big boy never let anyone down getting up to win by a head at Hawkesbury on Saturday. Due to the heavy rain the meeting was transferred to Hawkesbury with the track rated a Heavy 10. Jumping well as always, Magnaspin did get into an early battle for the lead but jockey Tom Sherry eventually allowed the leader to press on and take over. Magnaspin then settled behind a couple of lengths off him and got into a very good rhythm on the heavy track. Not much happened until the field commenced the run around the turn and for a fleeting moment he looked to come off the bit. Into the straight Magnaspin again set out after the leader and momentarily hit the front until Williamsburg came down the outside with a great run. Williamsburg then looked the winner but Magnaspin got up off the canvas like a champion boxer, and slugged it out with Williamsburg grabbing both him and Iknowastar just before the line to forge on to an incredibly brave victory. What a stirring race it was with Magnaspin showing so much guts and determination all the way up the straight and eventually forging to line when seemingly looking beaten.
He has returned in great form this Autumn and in 7 starts had a terrific win 1st up at Sandown over 1300m then 2 starts later going down narrowly at Flemington. Stretching out to 2040m winning well at Mooney Valley at the end of March before two starts later winning this rich prize at Hawkesbury. Magnaspin is building up a great record in 21 starts winning 5 races placing 2nd 4 time and 4 3rds with earning now of $706,450 a terrific haul for his connections. Plans are for Magnaspin to head to Queensland where there are some races for him to continue to build on his great record.
Magnaspin was a 60k purchase from the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale from the great vendors Maluka Tbs. He is a son of the former top Victorian stallion Magnus and is a ¾ brother to Gr3 winner Magnapal.
Congratulations to all owners in Magnaspin and thankyou Leon & Troy Corsten and their Team at Malua Racing especially Will Larkin – foreman at Malua Racing for finding this rich 500k restricted race.
